     James Cooper was the son of George Ashley Cooper and Elizabeth Oldfield.2 James Cooper was born in 1661 at Stratford-on-Avon, England.2 He married Hester (?) circa 1686.2 James Cooper married Mary (?) after 1702.2 James Cooper died on 4 December 1732 at Philadelphia, Pennslyvania.2
     He immigrated in 1682 to Trenton, New Jersey; tradition states that James was a minister and signed a note with some of his parisioners. It was a bad crop year, and they were unable to pay, and the creditors looked to him. At that time in England, when one could not pay a debt, he was put in prision. Out of respect for him, the authorities gave him the choice of coming to America.2 He was the owner of land in New Jersey. His deed reads: "Edward Byllinge to James Cooper 50 Acres, consideration 'of of good will and kindness for ye truth's sake he beareth unto you said property.'" The land was given on 21 September 1682 at Trenton, New Jersey.2
