Ward, son of James Melvin (Jim) Ward and Martha Jane Nichols, on 15 April 1884 at Santa Rosa Co., Florida.1 Martha Josephine Grimes died on 20 October 1961 at Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, at age 91.1 She was buried on 22 October 1961 at Pine Barren, Escambia County, Florida.1      She Living with son Terrance in the 1920 census of Escambia Co., FL.1 She Cemetery marker states she d. 1960 - date given from death certificate.1 She Known as Jo, she was a half sister to Julia who m. Dock WARD. Both are reported to be illegitimate by several sources. No evidence of a husband for Mary, their mother, was ever found in the census. Jo lived in Pensacola most of her life after moving from Pine Barren. After her separation, she worked for the L&N Railroad as a cook and always lived with her daughter Ola who never married. Raised my mother & her younger brother, Johnnie after the separation.1 Her married name was Ward.1 Reference: 15.1

James Melvin (Jim) Ward was the son of Elijah W. Ward and Sarah Anne (Sally) Cochran.2 James Melvin (Jim) Ward was born in 1820 at NC.1 He and Martha Jane Nichols were divorced; N.1 James Melvin (Jim) Ward married Martha Jane Nichols, daughter of Samuel Nichols and Mary [Peebles], on 23 November 1850 at Walton County, Florida.1 James Melvin (Jim) Ward died on 3 February 1890 at Pine Barren, Escambia County, Florida.1 He was buried at Pine Barren, Escambia County, Florida.1      He Pension records confirmed that it was not our James WARD.1 He George also said that he fought in the FL Indian Wars in 1837, but I could never find a record of such. Quite possible since his father & brother both served. I tried to get info from the FL State Archives which is the source George cited, but was told they do not keep these records.1 He Have photo Jim & Martha.1 He Found in the 1860 & 1870 censuses of Walton Co., FL and the 1880 census of Escambia Co., FL.1 He Family lore states that he was b. on a return visit to NC. Why they were in NC is not known! He is found in the Walton Co., FL 1850 -1870 census. Before 1880 the family came to Escambia Co., FL. There was a feud between his in laws, the NICHOLS, and the WARDs in Walton Co. His brothers in law, Coffel & Austin, were accused of being part of a group that hung two of James' brothers, John & Andrew. Another brother, Teen, came home from the CW and killed all the accused including the NICHOLS. Austin did escape after being shot in the face. He played dead, the bullet having passed through both cheeks. Whether this had anything to do with James & Teen coming to Escambia Co. is not known.1 Reference: 28.1 He Have never found documentation of Civil Ward service; according to lore he had a medical exemption due to bad legs. George Marchelos says he served in the Confederacy and is listed as J. M. WARD; Co. C 11th FL Infantry. Mark Lowe suggests he is the James WARD in Co. K 10th FL Infantry; he gives George Marchelos as source. A letter to George confirms he is indeed the source and he apparently had a change of mind. I am 99.9% sure this 'James' is not ours, but rather a resident of Monticello, Jefferson Co., FL. I have ordered pension records which should confirm. There is also a James M. WARD who served with the Union; Co. E 1st FL Cav. - probably Jim Ward of Ward's Raiders.1 He James' home in Pine Barren was where a church camp is located, across the highway from the cemetery. (Little Pine Barren).1

Ward and Sarah Anne (Sally) Cochran, on 23 November 1850 at Walton County, Florida.1 Martha Jane Nichols died circa 1903 at Wardsville, Escambia County, Florida.1 She was buried at Pine Barren, Escambia County, Florida.1      She Was living in Wardville with son William when she died. Her casket was transported by wagon back to Pine Barren in the rain. She was a very pretty woman especially for that period in time.1 Reference: 29.1 Her married name was Ward.1
